The annual pagan celebration, Lupercalia, traces its roots to annual Roman festivals where men stripped naked, grabbed whips, and spanked young maidens in hopes of increasing their fertility. The Christians tried to shut the lover's holiday down (naturally), but...epic failure. So, they slapped (ha) the Saint Valentines name on February 14th and brilliantly re-marketed it as a chaste celebration of love with a angelic cherub and a bow rather than a spanking, dick-swinging, raunch-fest.
